I’m not gonna lie- kids are way more expensive than I ever thought possible. Between diapers, groceries, doctor visits, and just all the little unexpected things that seem to pop up when raising a family, we’ve had to get a little creative.

United Way of Connecticut is Leading the Call for a Tax Credit for Families:

United Way of Connecticut is trying to reduce some of the pressure on families. They’re working tirelessly alongside community partners to establish a Connecticut Child Tax Credit. This means that:

  • 75% of CT Families would get $600 per child, for up to 3 children
  • This  money goes directly into the pockets of parents, which allows them to buy things that other programs don’t cover- and also helps provide the middle class with wiggle room.
  • This directly impacts 550,000 children

A Child Tax Credit Changes Lives

I knew kids were expensive, but seeing the numbers hurt. Here’s how an extra $600 stacks up against some of our big expenses:

  • USDA’s March 2025 Food Report estimates that the average monthly cost of feeding a 9 year old child was over $300. $600 helps provide two months of food.
  • Babycenter estimates the average monthly cost of formula is $100-$150/month. A child tax credit provides up to 6 months of formula.
  • Babycenter estimates that the cost of one year of diapers is $800. A child tax credit eases this burden and can provide 9 months of diapers.
  • American Camp Association estimates that the average cost of one week of summer camp is $363 a week for day camp. A tax credit provides some wiggle room for families to send their child to a one or two week camp session.

Most importantly, the tax credit  helps families find a little wiggle room to provide their children with everyday essentials to cope with the ever increasing cost of living.
