Ready for the shortest day of the year? December Solstice (Winter Solstice) is on Saturday, December 21, 2019 at 11:19 pm in Hartford. We’ve picked out some “winter” events for kids to enjoy and learn about this event in CT!
Hosted by Common Ground High School, Urban Farm and Environmental Education Center, at New Haven, this is a magical way to kick off the holiday break in the woods. Celebrate nature and community and a spirit of joyfulness. The winter solstice marks the start of winter, and the longest night and shortest day of the year. Come celebrate the slow return of the sun!
Activity stations open from 2 – 4 include: Making a solstice lantern to take home, learn about the journey the Earth makes around the sun that makes the seasons change. Enjoy a campfire, stories, songs, and a special hot cider solstice drink. At 4 PM everyone will gather at the campfire to add their wishes for the new year to a special handcrafted wish basket that we will burn in the fire and send our wishes up into the evening sky.
Please plan to arrive no later than 3:30 PM if you’d like to make your own lantern. Lantern making is indoors, and all other activities are outside.
This event is Free, no RSVP required.
