Take Your Child to the Library Day (TYCLD) is a Connecticut-grown, grass-roots project dreamed up in 2011 by librarians Nadine Lipman (Waterford Public Library, retired) and Caitlin Augusta (Stratford Library) with artist Nancy Elizabeth Wallace. It is now an international initiative that encourages families everywhere to take their children to their local library. TYCLD raises community awareness about the importance of the library in the life of a child, and promotes library services and programs for children and families. Join the celebration!  Way to go CT for the start-up and effort on the national campaign.  This year the day is Saturday, February 3 #TakeYourChildtotheLibraryDay

On the first Saturday in February*, thousands of libraries across the world celebrate Take Your Child to the Library Day by offering free, fun, fabulous activities for families. Your local library is an ideal place for children to play, discover, make friends, and have fun. And Take Your Child to the Library Day is the perfect time to discover some library magic. From magicians to craft programs, ice cream socials to storytimes, each library offers something unique and delightful.

We all need to structure “unplugged” time with our children…let’s agree – we all need to set aside time to gather up some good books, or a game or puzzle and sit down on the floor or a table and explore.  Electronic-free? Start by trying it without computers – listen to an audio book or a music CD and seek to finish it. Librarians, especially children’s ones, are the NICEST people on earth and their existence supports solid child development so don’t hesitate to ask for their assistance. And another priceless benefit in this economy when we may not have extra income needed for leisure activities — it’s all free!
